Continental Shines Some Light on the Marriott Marquis San Diego
For years, the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina has stood out as one of the more eye-catching buildings among the San Diego downtown skyline. Why? The two signature towers of the hotel – the north and south towers – resemble the hull of a boat and sail, reminiscent of those that line the private marina in which it sits. It was also the perfect inspiration for the hotel’s recent renovation. Located in the heart of the San Diego Bay, the beautiful waterfront views of the hotel and the contemporary coastal sophistication of its surroundings inspired the reimagined design of the luxurious Marriott Marquis San Diego, completed by Continental Contractors in March 2023.
Over the course of 12 months, Continental completed a 1,366 guestrooms and suites renovation in addition to building out six new rooms in the property’s revamped north tower. Continental began work on the property in November 2021 and completed the total renovation in March 2023, spanning the construction over two phases between the hotel’s two towers. Inspired by the marina’s beachy hues and the dark, metallic accents of the city’s modern architecture, the redesign of the hotel strived to bring a fresh and contemporary, yet luxurious feel to the guestroom experience. All guestrooms received new soft goods, case goods, and carpet, plus the bathrooms were updated with new vanities and stone tops, as well as new plumbing fixtures and accessories. Luxury vinyl tile was also installed in all of the refurbished hotel suites. A recent writeup in InspireDesign.com paints the picture beautifully, “The new guestrooms now showcase soft blue hues and light wood accents, perfectly paired with rope details and metal hardware to round out the metro-coastal vibe. The tower corridors also feature a new carpet design inspired by ocean waves and sandy shorelines.”
Following the complete guestroom renovation, Continental also provided upgrades to the hotel lobby as well as the M Club, an exclusive guest lounge and new addition to the hotel’s ground floor. “We converted an existing pre-function space into an M Club Lounge,” recalls Continental Senior Vice President, Danny Welch, “which included new drywall partitions, millwork, finishes, storefronts, FF&E, lighting, and HVAC installation, to name just a few details.” One of the key design elements of the M Lounge hinged on allowing as much natural light as possible into the soft, contemporary space. Continental worked closely with design firm Parker-Torres to ensure this significant design feature wasn’t compromised in the least during construction. The result? A warm and inviting space where guests can retreat, regroup, and recharge before enjoying the many attractions San Diego has to offer.
