With picturesque backdrops in every direction, Carmel, California is a popular destination for tourists and artists alike. In 2021 Continental Contractors had the pleasure of visiting this quaint coastal town for the renovation of Carmel Mission Inn, a boutique hotel nestled just off the iconic Pacific Coast Highway along California’s central coast.
Continental worked closely with local architecture and design firm Arcsine to refresh and revitalize the Carmel Mission Inn with a Bohemian art-scene aesthetic inspired by its natural surroundings of redwood trees, gorgeous sunsets, and cliff-side ocean views. In nine months, Continental completed a total interior public space makeover of the hotel lobby and front desk area, meeting rooms, and public restrooms, as well as the new restaurant and bar, Shearwood Tavern. Continental facilitated the installation of the distinctive yet natural local materials necessary for maintaining the playful, creative, and welcoming aesthetic, including chevron wood floors, custom furniture, interesting lighting fixtures, hand-crafted tiles, plus custom millwork and shiplap detailing.
Continental also renovated the exterior patio. The mid-century modern design of the serene outdoor public space included strategically placed fire pits for year-round use, landscaping, pavers, and mosaic tile designed to mimic an outdoor rug.
