Anchored in Annapolis: Continental’s Latest Local Transformation
When it comes to hotel renovations, there’s something special about working in your own backyard. That’s exactly what Continental Contractors experienced during their latest project at The Westin Annapolis, nestled in the heart of Maryland’s historic capital city. Just steps from the United States Naval Academy and the picturesque Chesapeake Bay waterfront, this downtown gem was ready for a fresh look.
The Continental team began the transformation in December 2024, undertaking a comprehensive renovation that would reshape the hotel’s public spaces. Throughout the project, technical precision met architectural detail at every turn. The lobby dining room became a focal point, where skilled craftsmen executed a complete reconfiguration centered around an impressive new circular bar. The installation features a specially engineered cylindrical column housing draft lines, premium stone countertops, and custom tile work that elevates the entire space.
The former bar area underwent a significant transformation with the installation of a custom hologram fireplace. The project team’s technical expertise is evident in every detail, from the architectural-grade millwork to the precisely positioned lighting that enhances the space’s ambiance. The reception area showcases a striking custom-welded metal and stone desk positioned against a textured limestone feature wall, creating an impressive arrival experience for guests. The lobby ceiling now features walnut cove beams reminiscent of a ship’s hull, bringing warmth and architectural character to the space.
Throughout the public spaces, Continental’s craftsmen incorporated design elements that celebrate Annapolis’s rich maritime heritage. Detailed rope edging was meticulously installed into the renovated market area – a nod to the city’s sailing tradition – while a hammered stone hydration station combines functionality with refined design elements. Black-framed glass partitions were also installed to create thoughtfully defined spaces while maintaining an open, welcoming atmosphere.
The scope of work touched every corner of the hotel’s public spaces, with the team delivering comprehensive updates to the dining area restrooms, fitness center, and pool facilities. Each phase of construction required careful coordination to maintain the hotel’s daily operations—a challenge the Continental team met with characteristic precision and professionalism.
While every Continental project holds special significance, there’s undeniable pride in transforming a space in one’s own community. One of the perks? Team members who aren’t accustomed to field visits having the opportunity to see the in-progress work in action! Project Manager Greg Herman accompanied Human Resources Director Allyson Fisher and the Maryland office Accounting Department on a field trip to the then under-construction Westin Annapolis job site. “Our wonderful accounting department rarely – if ever – gets to visit a job site,” said Greg. “One of the perks to having a project in our own backyard!”
